Welsh Higher Education Cuts Threaten Research and Training

Imran Hussain, Reporter

The Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) has voiced its concerns regarding proposed budget cuts for higher education by the Welsh government after examining the latest draft budget.

It has claimed that the cuts proposed would put many higher education courses at risk. The cuts would also lead to a massively reduced funding for research purposes, in fact HEFCW has claimed that they would have to reduce their budget to only £8m in 2016/17, compared to the £70m allocated for 2015/16.

HEFCW have warned that the cuts the reduced budget would force them to make would have a negative impact on their support for world class research and NHS staff training in particular.

The Welsh government have said it is up to HEFCW how it allocated its funds.
